This week newsletter shared comments from farmers, invited you to a policy discussion at HHI and highlighted the high hunger rates among active duty military. You can read the newsletter here (7 minute read). Be sure to sign up by emailing mark@hallhungerinitiative.org
We need to listen to Ohio’s farmers. Our friends at the OEFFA (Ohio Ecological Food and Farming Association) have collected stories from small farmers as they discuss the challenges of tariffs.
“The biggest impact is the price increase of farm supplies and small equipment that we purchase this time of year. We’re a small operation so we basically purchase our supplies at retail and then we sell our products at wholesale prices, that’s already a tough equation,” said Lindsay Klaunig of Trouvaille Farms near Athens, Ohio.
OEFFA has more farmer comments, an informative chart on tariffs and additional related news on their blog page.
In addition to tariffs, farmers are being hurt by cancelled government contracts, rising prices for supplies and reduced support due to cuts in federal agencies. It’s especially hurting our small farmers.
You can help by making an extra effort to head out to farmers markets or by purchasing local food at grocery stores and supporting restaurants that serve area produce. Not only are you supporting our food economy, you are also getting the freshest, healthiest meals!
If we want our farmers to be here for us, we have to be there for them!
