“Eat Fresh, Buy Local” Kicks Off August 8th
Newsletter June 26, 2025
“Eat Fresh, Buy Local “ is HHI’s Local Food Campaign focused on encouraging everyone to make local food a healthy habit. We believe one of the ways to end hunger is to create good jobs around healthy food, especially in underserved areas. Supporting our community food growers and businesses has plenty of benefits!
Here’s just a few of the advantages of locally grown food:
- More nutritious
- Local farms create good jobs
- Strengthens sustainability and helps the environment
- Businesses like groceries and restaurants that buy local boosts our economy
- Reflects our cultural diversity
- Safer
And, it just tastes better!
You’re invited to join us at this year’s campaign kicks off on Friday, Aug. 8 at 1 pm at Second St. Market as part of National Farmers Market Week. We will recognize a few of our community’s Local Food Heroes and hear from area growers plus you can shop the vendors at the market.
Your support is more important now than ever. Federal cuts have eliminated several vital support programs for small farmers and tariffs are causing chaos while cuts to SNAP and Produce Perks makes it harder for consumers to buy fresh produce. Many people in the Miami Valley have been working for years to build a resilient food system but these cuts threaten to undo all that work. We are in a crisis situation and it’s time we rally around those who grow and prepare our food. That’s the rallying cry for “Eat Fresh, Buy Local”
