June is Pride Month and a time to talk about the high rate of food insecurity in the LGBTQ+ community. Research shows that the hunger rate in this community is more than double the national rate and more than triple for those in the trans community. Discrimination is a major reason for these high hunger rates, including limited employment opportunities, bullying and exclusion in schools and even rejection from their own families. All of this increases the risk of homelessness and poverty, leading to high rates of hunger.

Hunger in America is the result of a mix of factors and discrimination figures prominently as a tragic and preventable cause. That’s why we consistently see higher rates of hunger among those who are frequently targets of bigotry. Whether it’s based on race, gender, religion, national origin or simply who we choose to love, discrimination is a leading cause of hunger.

It’s a stark reminder that simply treating each person with respect and dignity is a powerful step towards food justice.
